Professor Amy B. M. Tsui obtained her B.A, M.A. and Dip.Ed. from the University of Hong Kong, and PhD (Linguistics) from the University of Birmingham, U.K., in 1986. She taught at the National University of Singapore and the Chinese University of Hong Kong before joining the University of Hong Kong in 1990.
Professor Tsui has been Chair Professor of Language and Education since 1997 and was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) in December 2007. Prior to this appointment, she was Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor for different periods in 2001, 2002 and 2004, Honorary Director of the Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching from June 2006 to June 2007, and Head of the-then Department of Curriculum Studies in the Faculty of Education from January 1998 to December 2001. Professor Tsui has also served on a number of university committees, some of the major ones include Chairman of the Steering Committee on 4-year Undergraduate Curriculum (2006-date), Vice-Chairman and Chairman of Board of Academic Awards (1999-2004), member of Language Policy Committee (2005-date), Committee on Academic Review (2003-date), University Research Committee (2006-date) and Policy Board of Postgraduate Education (1999 – 2004).
Professor Tsui has published eight authored and edited books in prestigious venues such as Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press, and eighty journal papers and book chapters in the areas of discourse analysis, language policy, teachers’ professional development, learning theories, and ESL teaching and learning. She has given a number of keynote and plenary papers in international conferences in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, and serves on the editorial and advisory boards of a number of international refereed journals.
Professor Tsui has provided service to the local community through serving on a number of Hong Kong Government advisory bodies, including the Central Policy Unit, Standing Committee on Language and Research, Curriculum Development Council, Medium of Instruction Appeals Committee, Working Group on Medium of Instruction and Language Benchmarking Committee of ACTEQ, and the Hong Kong Institute of Education Council. She has actively promoted the quality of teaching and learning in the local education community through her leadership in government and corporation sponsored projects and consultancies on ESL learning, teacher development and medium of instruction, totalling over 100m HK dollars.
