Professor John Malpas was first appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor in December 2000 with the portfolio of planning and resources. Subsequently he has become responsible for University infrastructure and development. Professor Malpas has had oversight of the development, formulation and implementation of the University's Strategic Plan and its coordination with the Faculties and their Development Plans. Whilst still coordinating University-wide medium to long-term strategic projects, since September 2004, Professor Malpas has also taken up responsibility for University infrastructure and development, including IT and management information, estates, health and safety issues.
Professor John Malpas is Chair Professor of Earth Sciences. He obtained undergraduate, Master's and Doctor of Science's degrees from Oxford University and a Ph.D. from University of Newfoundland, Canada. Before coming to Hong Kong in 1995 to develop and lead a new Department of Earth Sciences, he was Professor and Dean of Graduate Studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland. His major areas of research interest are the origin and evolution of the Earth's oceans, the formation of mountain belts, earth system science and geochemistry, and his work has been recognized through a number of national and international awards and medals. He has been a member of the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research, advising in aspects of earth systems, and member of the National Research Council of Canada Committee on International Science, Engineering and Technology, President of the Geological Association of Canada, and a leader of the Ocean Drilling Program, the largest international earth science research program investigating the origin of the world ocean.
