Q1. What are your aspirations for HKU?

A. As a research-led university on the global stage, HKU must continue to excel in its academic work, provide the best education to its next generation of students and produce the intellectual and human resources for Hong Kong and beyond. I would like to see HKU become not only a truly outstanding university widely recognized around the world but the leading institution of this kind in Asia. As the premier university of the region, HKU should lead society, advise government, and act as a player and narrator of events in the development of China during what many regarded as "Asia's century". That is probably the best way we can contribute to the future of Hong Kong, China, and indeed, the world.

As Vice-Chancellor of HKU, I will make sure that the University captures the energy generated as it celebrates its Centenary and uses its momentum to elevate the University's international reputation. To maintain its leading position in higher education in the region, I will continue to garner the strong support and recognition of HKU's great range of stakeholders, provide our students with the best education and training in leadership skills, global citizenship, and life-long learning abilities. I will also ensure that proper resources are available to support the physical development of the University, the innovative work of my academic colleagues and our curriculum development and education programmes. With the help of a strong senior management team to carry out the day-to-day work of the University, I am confident that I can continue to lead HKU from strength to strength.
